The Holistic
Care Center 'Ashraya', under Action India Aids Project (AIAP) - a non-profit
making project of "Action India" - is determined to make a positive
difference in the fight against AIDS, addressing the needs of the
most vulnerable, with a heart that opens to the joys and sorrows of
those infected and affected with HIV/AIDS......
'Ashraya'
in Sanskrit means shelter and therefore the name 'Ashraya' was coined.
We thank National AIDS Control Organisation, Govt.
of NCT of Delhi and Delhi StateAIDS
Control Society (DACS), JINDAL Stainless Steel & The
Bryan Guinness Charitable Trust, UK for their support for
setting up and running the Holistic Care Centre Ashraya.
Our experiences
with the people living with HIV brought us face to face with the dire
need of care facilities as well as awareness and prevention programs.
The case of a truck driver who was refused a hip replacement surgery
because of his HIV positive status at one of the premier health care
institutes in New Delhi blatantly showed the dire need of care facilities
for those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. The truck driver was
not a lone example, there are numerous others who have to face rampant
stigmatization and suffer crassest violation of their human rights
merely because of their HIV positive status. The general apathy, judgmental
attitudes of the staff at the healthcare service centers and the harrowing
experiences faced by patients with AIDS were disturbing.
We at Action
India felt that there is a need to have special facilities care center
to provide spaces for people with AIDS to come to a home without any
fear or shame. Hence began our efforts to start a care home for people
living with HIV/AIDS to enable them to access services with dignity
and respect. Nafisa Ali, Chairperson, Action India met Chief Minister
Sheila Dikshit who agreed in January 2001 to work in tandem and give
a building to start a care home. The Govt. of NCT of Delhi left no
stone unturned to create a special facility for HIV positive people.
Action India entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Government
of Delhi in April’ 2002 under the Bhagidari-Partnership
scheme. The Delhi Government leased two acres of land and a built-up
structure in Rajokri near Indira Gandhi international Airport to start
the Holistic Care Home named ‘Ashraya’ having a capacity
for 50 beds. The ‘Ashraya Holistic Care Centre’ was inaugurated
on 17th December, 2002 by the Hon’ble Chief Minister Smt. Sheila
Dishit. The National AIDS Control Organization initiated the support
for the ten-bedded facility for the people living with HIV/AIDS, and
at present, Delhi State AIDS Control Society provides support for ten-bed
facility at Ashraya. The center caters to the various needs of people
living with HIV/ AIDS (PLWHA) in terms of their treatment and rehabilitation.
